Collective Sound Receives 2008 Best of Savage Award
U.S. Local Business Association’s Award Plaque Honors the Achievement
WASHINGTON D.C., July 24, 2008 -- Collective Sound has been selected for the 2008 Best of Savage Award in the Disc Jockeys category by the U.S. Local Business Association (USLBA).
The USLBA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USLBA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.
Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2008 USLBA Award Program focused on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USLBA and data provided by third parties.

Carol wins Toastmasters competition
04/20/08 21:26
Two weeks ago I
competed in a Toastmaster club level competition for
the evaluating of speeches. We had a guest speaker
come in and all of us competitors listened to the
speech and then were escorted out of the room to
write our evaluations of the speaker and of the
speech itself. Then we were brought back in, one at a
time, to give our evaluations. I came in second place
at this competition. I entered this competition
because I felt I needed to improve in this area and
competing would make me focus on it more. I am a
person who tends to look at the good in things and I
am starting to learn the benefit of giving
constructive criticism and better ways to do it. I
have learned in Toastmasters that I am actually
giving a gift and helping people get better when I
offer evaluations and ways that they might improve.
It is never personal, it is always based on their
speeches, however, I find this skill useful in other
areas of my life. In evaluating you offer positive
comments as well as commenting on areas that may need
improvement. Some speeches are so good you will have
a hard time finding room for improvement and visa
versa. There is a right and wrong way to evaluate
people. You don't want to hurt feelings but if you
notice a problem you should tell them.
So I took second place and that meant I was eligible to compete the following week in the area competition. I went, I almost backed out. As I said, this is not my strong area and I was nervous. My fellow Toastmasters would not let me back out and encouraged me to continue. I listened to the speaker and really enjoyed her speech. She was so energetic and entertaining. I was the last to give my evaluation and I guess they saved the best for last because I won first place. I received a trophy and certificate. I am now eligible to go on to district competition in Rochester but I cannot make it. I have plans the day of the competition.
I will continue to compete in future competitions for Toastmasters. This club has helped me so much with my public speaking skills and I am getting to a point where I feel I can help others too. It is a wonderful feeling to finally be getting it. Public speaking can be scary for all of us and one of the best ways to take the fear away is to join a club like Toastmasters. You will get confidence and learn new skills that will be useful in many areas of your life.

Squidoo, Best Ever, About Us - 02172008
02/17/08 12:09
We have done some
updates on our website this week. Restructuring of
our photo gallery and a new "About Us" page which will let anyone who
is interested know a little bit more about us. Not
a new concept but perhaps interesting to someone.
Carol is into it and wrote quite a bit for it.
I have continued to be impressed with squidoo and some of the new services they are offering. We have two information pages available on squidoo now. The first is a little primer on wedding reception grand entrances. The second is some information about alternatives to clinking glasses at receptions. Squidoo seems to be well structured and is asserting some dominant web characteristics recently. A google search for wedding reception grand entrance shows my squidoo page in the top ten. The free link back to my website seems to be doing the trick as well. We are now in the top ten for a google search of 'MN DJ' now. The folks at squidoo will do well for themselves and most likely be purchased at some point in the future. I wish the them well.
For fun, I have continued work on the ever.com pages. I have registered best.djs.ever.com and finest.dj.ever.com now. It's a lot of fun and should be good for some bragging rights down the road. The toughest challenge for me right now i s not duplicating any of the content. Creativity is something I don't think I lack and I look forward to polishing them up a bit. Did I mention the ever.com is run by the squidoo folks?

Custom up-lighting and monogram lighting offering - NEW
02/10/08 11:37
We couldn't resist
adding custom up-lighting and monogram lighting to
our lineup of services. It makes sense since custom
lighting can enhance the ambiance and mood of any
event. Creating an atmosphere that's fun, lively,
full of anticipation and conducive to celebrating. We
don't have pictures yet and we will most likely comp
this custom lighting service for free to one or two
of our upcoming events in order to capture those
images. A more complete description of this offering
is available on our custom
lighting page.

Norwegian Wedding Customs and Traditions
01/17/08 22:40
We have swedish and french wedding customs and
traditions. We now have Norway represented as well.
There is a large Norwegian contingent residing in
Minnesota so this should actually be a fairly popular
subject. Find out about fir tree planting, the
Bundas, and why there were so many who immigrated to
the United States back in the 1800s.
Norwegian wedding traditions and customs
Norway is a
wonderful country rich in custom and traditions. It
is also beautiful with snow capped mountains, fjords,
and many lakes. It is no wonder that when many
Norwegians emigrated to the United states during the
1800s that they settled in Minnesota. Well, actually
it was that land cost about $1.25 per acre when
purchased from the government. This was very
appealing and provided great opportunities for the
Norwegian pioneers willing to make the trip.
Traditionally the
groom will wear what's called a bundas, which is a
hand made woolen suit. The bundas will usually
include a white silk shirt, short pants, stockings
that come up to the calf, and a vest and topcoat. It
would be elaborately embroidered. The groomsmen and
best man will where similar clothes. The bride would
wear a white or silver wedding gown along with a gold
or silver crown. Usually the crown would be decorated
with small metal bangles which would tinkle when she
moved. It is said that the sound would scare of evil
spirits. Todays bride may want to simply wear a
smaller version of the crown and still pay honor to
the tradition. It is also said that bridesmaids
dressed similarly (but not the same) as the bride
could confuse evil spirits and help protect her as
well.
There might be an individual designated the bedamann ("bidding man") who would be responsible for going from house to house inviting guests and relaying details of the upcoming festivities. The couple would send out home made invitations with him and many would end up being framed. The modern version of the bedamann is obviously the internet and a website. But the tradition can still exist
At the conclusion of the ceremony the bride and groom will exchange wedding bands. They will also kiss which seals the relationship between the newly married couple. The round ring representing endless love with no beginning and no end, the kiss symbolizing an exchange of a portion of their souls. Additionally the newly married couple will be escorted out of the church to the sound of an accordion.
A reception will follow where there will be many speeches wishing the couple much happiness. Music and dancing is also a central feature at the reception. The cake called Brudlaupskling was made of bread and dates back to a time when flour was rare on Norwegian farms. It was topped with a mixture of cheese, cream, and syrup.
It is also tradition to plant two small fir trees on either side of the couples door as a symbol of the children to come.

Lisa and James Reception - 01/12/08
01/16/08 17:48
Lisa and James were
planning to get married in August of 2008. James is
in the Navy and when duty called they changed their
date to January 12th, 08. Luckily we still had that
day open and could still DJ their wedding reception.
Lisa did most of the planning and did a great
job especially since she had such a little time to
work with. They had a photo booth at the reception
and the videographer had created a lovely montage and
love story for the guests to view. The videographer,
Jeff Fuchs of Northern Lights
Video whom we have worked with
before had also interviewed guests during
the evening for a video guest book which I thought
was a wonderful idea. They also used the photos
from the photo booth to make another guests book
and guests got to keep copies too.
We arrived early, so early we couldn't get in. The bingo was still rolling. When bingo finished up we hurried in with our gear and got all set up in about an hour. We were on a stage. The guests showed up around 4:45. We were playing some nice jazz and classic pop (Sinatra, Martin, Fitzgerald, Armstrong, etc...). We welcomed guests and got acquainted with Amanda Ling and Julia of Premier Planning Services and venue staff. Everyone was very professional and did their job well. Then the wedding party arrived! We got them all lined up before they even entered the reception. It took a little time. We were going to introduce the ushers and parents as well as the rest of the wedding party. The groom is a huge fan of WWE Wrestling and so we introduced each person as if they were entering the ring of a match and they each had their own snipet of a song. The guys were entering from one side of the room and the ladies from the other. We read like wrestling announcers and the wedding party danced in like superstars. Lots of energy and fun in the air. We received lots of good comments after this entrance and lots of people asked for our business cards.
After the entrance Lisa and James went right into their first dance. The song, "At The Beginning" by Donna Lewis and Richard Marx. Beautiful song! Then Lisa and James took the mic and thanked everyone for coming. After that we had a blessing by a member of Lisa's family. He was kind enough to introduce himself prior to the arrival of the wedding party and I told him I would be sure and get him a mic. After the blessing salads were served. There was a vendor table for dinner and Lisa and James gave us dinner. Very kind and generous of them. We enjoyed talking to the Wedding Planners, Photographers, Videographer and Photo Booth Operator during dinner.
The food was good and during the serving of cake the Video and Love Story were played. It was very lovely and there were a lot of oohs and ahs. I loved hearing more about how James and Lisa met and fell in love. I did sample the cake which was from Queen of Cakes and it was fabulous. I make cakes so I consider myself a cake snob, but this cakes was delicious.
The whole wedding party toasted Lisa and James. This wedding party was pretty funny. They brought up many humorous events but they were never inappropriate.
Then we had the Father/Daughter Dance. This was a little different, we invited all the fathers and daughters out after a moment, to dance with Lisa and Bob. The song choice was Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder. That was a nice song to lead us into open dancing with other songs from that era.
This was a large reception and the dance floor was quickly packed. We took requests and did a Dollar Dance but no Bouquet and Garter. The Brides family really liked Polkas and the Grooms father asked for a few waltzes so we fit those in nicely and they were received well by the other guests.
We also ran into an old Bride and Groom at this wedding. This Bride and Groom, Ben and Angie, had actually been the reason we were DJing Lisa and James' reception. Lisa had been in Angie's wedding. They are best friends. It is always great to see past Brides and Groom. We asked for their current address so we could be sure and send them anniversary cards in the future.
One thing I forgot to mention was instead of clinking for kisses during dinner is we set up a putting green in the horseshoe area that the head table created. People were encouraged to putt for a kiss or wave their red napkins for a kiss. Lisa is a teacher of deaf students and this is a deaf culture tradition at weddings. She called it visual noise. There was a signing interpreter there for the guests that were deaf and two people that Lisa works with are deaf and came up to sign about the napkin tradition and Lisa interpreted it. It was very cool. The people had a blast putting, even if they weren't getting the ball in the hole, and continuously waving their napkins. I think Lisa and James did more kissing than eating. It was really nice to see the guests having so much fun with the Putting for a Kiss. We have lots of great ideas for this event and it is always fun to do them. We have the Bowling For A Kiss with the WII and we have the Sing For A Kiss and much, much more.
Songs like The Chicken Dance, I Knew The Bride and Wipe Out were big hits at this reception. They definitely liked all the interactives and the Oldies.
Wedding receptions like this are a blessing to me. Everything went so well and the people were so nice and kind. The guests were definitely happy to be there together. Being that the wedding had to be moved up the Bride herself commented on how thrilled she was by the spectacular turn out of guests. Lisa and James are wonderful people and make a wonderful couple. They have big hearts, great sense of humor and obviously love each other very much.
I wish them happiness and success and I hope I will see them again in the future.

Website Updates - Every picture is clickable
01/11/08 20:08
I've been busy updating the look and feel of our
website
recently. Not only have we changed the look and
feel but a number of other "under the
hood" type changes have taken place. For
one, we are using the theme "CA Corners" from
rapid ideas. It
is a rapidweaver
theme and in case you couldn't tell. We use
rapid weaver for our website.
Another major change is the images displayed on our website. Each image, if it isn't already, will soon be clickable and display in a greybox. This is really nice because our entire website is becoming a photo gallery. If you have any trouble with this then please drop us a note BTW.
We've also been cleaning up some of the fonts and colors we have collected over the years. Carol has started writing some blog entries and that is exciting as well.

Soulja Boy - Crank That Dance Instruction
01/11/08 19:28
There is no denying that "Crank That" by Soulja Boy
is a popular song right now. In case you didn't know
there is a dance that goes with it. The following
video shows you how.
I should also point out that "Crank That" is a little controversial in that it has some suggestive lyrics. We will most likely not play "Crank That" unless requested and it fits within the guidelines for your reception. Collective Sound supports must play, priority play, and do not play lists on both our online and paper reception planners.

Fun slideshow service with Animoto
01/08/08 19:48
I stumbled across this
really fun slideshow software on the net from
Animoto.
They have taken slideshows in a new and fun direction
with an excellent web based interface for creating
and sharing photo montages. What I like best is that
you can use a music background that they provide or
if you prefer, your own mp3 may be uploaded. What is
really intriguing is the internal algorithms used to
produce the end product. Once you upload your photos
and select your music track Animoto's servers go to
work analyzing the music and photos in order to
create a unique slide show.
With heavy beat oriented modern music the slide show will have a more aggressive feel with transitions between the photos. With more sedate or easy listening type music the transitions will be softer and less wild. Each time you submit your photo and music selection a different end product will be produced. One option is to simply resubmit it for remix.
Link to the video if it doesn't show in the box below http://animoto.com/play/f5c0064de5d7097d05a6d6dee315f09f
I have requested a few new features from Animoto and let me tell you they are on top of support. Each time getting a response or thank you within a few hours. And they actually implemented one or two of my requests. Animoto has recently been purchased by google. It will be interesting to see where that takes them in the future.

Reflecting on 2007 - Our best year yet!
01/06/08 11:14
Hello Everyone,
I have been thinking about 2007, reviewing it in my mind. I am very happy with how things went for Collective Sound. Not only did we work almost every weekend but we made some important improvements. We joined MAPDJ, we bought the new Bose speakers, we improved the website, we joined Toastmasters to help be the best public speakers we can be and much, much more. We fine tuned a lot of what we already did well like transitions, interactive activities, special dances etc... I like the new typing of the outline for final review and approval from client. I think it has simplified things.
We have plans to attend workshops and dance lessons this year. One of the workshops is really going to impress our Brides and Grooms and I will write a separate blog on that soon.
The dancing will be something I can share with the guests. I hope to be able to show some basic swing moves, maybe some salsa, ball room along with the line dances we already teach. I am not a dance teacher but I would be happy to teach a few steps if it will get even more people on the dance floor.
I was also thinking about the prerecorded messages. I love the idea of putting special messages in a first dance song or even playing the first dance song again at the end of the evening with special messages in it that the Bride and Groom would be hearing for the first time. I also like the idea of a short intro for the Father/Daughter dance and Mother/Son. I like the idea of either telling how the father feels or saying a little about him on the mic and then inviting them out to celebrate the Father/Daughter Dance or having the father prerecord a message in their song. Same for the Mother/Son Dance. I like the element of surprise. I think Bride/Groom and guests will all be touched by the gesture. I also like the idea of putting a message in a song for the Bride and Groom from someone who could not be at the wedding. For example, someone in the military, someone who has a medical condition making it so they cannot travel etc.... We can record a message from them. Parents and Wedding Parties can really help with this idea.
Another goal for 2008 is to communicate more with friends and family prewedding to get good ideas to surprise/assist the Bride and Groom, for example with a message from someone, a special song from childhood, a funny story, anything to touch their hearts. The wedding party could get together and make a special recording over a song for them as well. The possibilities are endless.
We have been creating and performing some very spectacular Grand Entrances. I know that will continue in 08. We have a lot of fun with these. Some people are doing themes others are picking snipets of songs, a different one for each person in the wedding party to showcase their personalities. It has been a lot of fun and I will continue to find new and creative ways to introduce people.
I have a new years resolution to be the best listener I can be. I want to see the Clients vision of their event clearly. I want the client to feel like I am definitely on board and on the same page with what they think needs to happen to make the event the best it can be. Like Aerosmith said/sang "I don't want to miss a thing". I am also giving up soda pop. Wish me luck!
Have a great year everyone!
Special note to clients-Thanks so much for your business, Collective Sound could not exist without you! Thanks for all the referrals, we won't let you down!

Miscellaneous Website Update
08/30/07 23:04
It's been a
while since updating the blog here. Carol and I have
been busy doing shows every weekend and without a
doubt this has been our busiest year yet. We have a
good portion of next year booked up now as well and
are getting inquiries for 2009 already. We must be
doing something right...
Tonight I finally got around to updating the pictures in the gallery (http://www.collsound.com/photos/photos.html) so be sure to check that out. We have had some really fun events recently and I think that shows in the new pictures. I have also promised Carol to get all of our new CDs onto the computers and added to our online planner. It looks like about 30 CDs to add, you think I would know better than to procrastinate but sometimes it's much easier to just take the dog to the park when a free moment comes around.

A Friday Wedding and Reception can Provide Upscale Opportunities
02/21/07 21:13
Saturday is the most expensive day of the week to get
married. If you are on a budget or your favorite
venue is already booked, consider having a Friday
wedding and reception. You dollar will go much
farther on a Friday compared to a Saturday night
since most wedding vendors provide deep discounts for
the non Saturday events in order to encourage these
bookings. Collective Sound is no exception.
One downside to a Friday wedding and reception is that some of your guests will have to put in a full day of work before your event.

Etiquette Hell Repository of Bad Manners
02/18/07 20:15
Want to read some horror story posts like how the mischievous Aunt Babes (AKA Crazy Aunt Babes) almost ruined a wedding reception by placing feminine products on all of the tables? Or how about the one where the grooms co-worker who went to the reception with only a verbal invitation and was accidentally seated at the brides family table?
There are literally thousands of stories like this available on the Etiquette Hell web site. There are sections for tacky invitations, tacky toasts and of course tacky wedding vendors just to name a few. If you have some extra time or are in need of some humor you should check this site out.

Emergency Supplies
01/24/07 18:36
A good wedding DJ will have a number of items tucked
away just in case they are needed. If you've ever
been asked to delay the first dance because the MOB
camera batteries were dead and someone was going to
the store to get some fresh ones. Or the bride can't
find the garter or bouquet for those events. You will
appreciate the fact that your DJ may have spares just
for this situation just to keep things moving along.
If you or anyone in your party needs something do not
hesitate to ask. Some of the items Collective Sound
carries are:
1. Batteries
2. Garter
3. Bouquet
4. Pliers and Basic Tools
5. Scissors
6. Sewing Kit
7. Safety Pins
8. Spot Remover / White Chalk
9. Tape
10. Feminine Products
11. Aspirin / Tums / Bandaids / Disinfectant
...
There is more but you get the idea.

Vendor Booking Order
01/21/07 08:10
Not carved in stone,
but a suggested order for booking your wedding
vendors follows. Of utmost importance is the
reception site and caterer since these are sometimes
booked over a year in advance. The caterer used by a
specific reception site may or may not be an option
for you. A few recommend and sometimes even require
the use of a specific catering service.
General advice is book as early as possible. Good sites and vendors sometimes book up to two years in advance.
1. Reception Site / Caterer
2. Ceremony site
3. Photographer/Videographer
4. DJ and/or Band
5. Cake
6. Florist
7. Transportation
8. Invitations

Dance Lessons
01/15/07 19:43
If you have two left
feet you shouldn't feel lost.
Your first dance as a married couple is truly a special occasion, so you may want to put some special effort into preparing for it. You will want it to be special, fun, exciting, and unique. If you're not a good dancer, don't worry. Once you pick out a song, it won't take long to get comfortable dancing to it. One approach is to just hold each other romantically and sway to the music, like trees in the wind. But you may want to consider taking some private dance lessons. A dance instructor can help you learn some easy dance steps especially suited to the music you love so well. An added benefit is that partner dancing can be extremely enjoyable and it can give the two of you something special to do together as a couple after your wedding!.
I've compiled the the following list of area businesses offering dance instruction for your convenience.

Bridal Bouquet / Flower Types
12/31/06 08:47
Originally, the bride
carried a bouquet of herbs designed to ward off evil
spirits and encourage good ones. For instance,
dill invoked lust, and was meant to be eaten by the
bride, rosemary signified remembrance. Flowers that
were said to have different significances were added
to the bride's bouquet as time progressed.
Today, a bride often uses the significance of
individual flowers in choosing the flowers for her
bouquet.
Below is a summary of the meaning between the giver and receiver of the most popular flowers.
Bridal Rose - Happiness in love
Daffodil - Warm regards - given between friends
Fern - Sincerity of intentions
Forget-me-not - True love
Honeysuckle - Represents the bonds of Love
Iris - Messages
Ivy - Friendship
Lavender - Luck
Lilac - First Emotions of Love

Advice For The Amateur Wedding Videographer
12/23/06 10:24
One of the biggest advantages of having a professional
videographer is their ability to get good
shots. They have probably done hundreds of
weddings and just know what works and what
doesn't. They also have the ability and
experience necessary to edit the video and
create a polished product from it. Something
that will last a lifetime. If you are having a
family member or friend shoot your day, make
sure they get this info. It will help immensely.
Use a tripod to stabilize your shots. Especially if zooming in while capturing the ceremony. Nothing screams amateur like a shaky video and zooming in magnifies the shake.
Extra tape, extra batteries, anything else? Just be prepared.
