I responded that we did in fact offer the Love Story and would be happy to meet with her and her Fiance Aaron to discuss the details of their wedding/reception. ...We got everything organized and Karl had turned on the lights so he could dramatically turn them back off when it was time for the Entrance. ... The audience cheered for every wedding party member like they were the Chicago Bulls themselves and when the Bride and Groom were introduced they stood up and screamed like Michael Jordan himself had just entered the room. ...There was a little mix up with the bar, they were suppose to cut it off for all guests during dinner but not for the wedding party. ...If they clinked their glasses, they had to answer questions about the bride and groom to make them kiss, if they answered incorrectly the Erica & Aaron would not kiss. ...Everyone was seated the Bride and Groom were in their seats and we told the story of how Erica & Aaron met, fell in love, got engaged and how they all came to be there that day.

Pam said the nicest thing to me and I will never forget it, she said "You know when you find the perfect wedding dress and fits perfectly, and you know it is the one, that is how I feel about you guys being our DJ's". ... Pam & Dan had both been married before and as a result knew what they wanted for their reception. ...We had 3 meetings to go over details and we wanted to view the video montage early because we were going to play the music and wanted to make sure we could operate everything and that it would all be compatible etc.. ...Next, the boys, Ryan & Austin came out to Star Wars well Ryan did anyway, I said something like from a galaxy far, far away and One of the boys came out fighting like a little Jedi and the other refused. ...If people clinked their glasses I would go over to them (sometimes they had to raise their hands if lots of clinking occurred), asked Karl to play a snippet of a song. ...I met some very nice people and felt so lucky to have celebrated Dan & Pam's special day with them.

I remember thinking while I was getting ready, that the whole day was starting kind of early and wondered if the guests would make it to Midnight. ...Dan and Danielle are such a wonderful couple, people were so happy to be a part of their special day, me included. ...So Karl picked Radar Love and we practiced and timed it just right so Dan and Danielle would walk in right at the Crescendo of “We Got A Thing They Call Radar Love”, it just worked. ...We invited Dan & Danielle back to the dance floor and played a special song recorded by a band that they go and see regularly and the band was at the reception as guests. We played the song and they were surprised about but loved the song and started dancing and then they realized it was their band covering the song and band members came up and made a circle around them and the groom started crying. ...I chose this song because it was to be a snowball and there were tons of guests and this song is long and lovely.

We pulled up to the loading dock and the Science Museum had large carts for us to load our equipment on. 3 vendors showed up at the same time but we all got carts and people to take care of us. ...I was really looking forward to this reception because Melinda & Eric were so wonderful to work with. ...I had told Melinda not to worry about giving us dinner but one of the caterers brought us food anyway. At the end of the evening she asked for a business card and told us we were the best DJ's she had ever seen at a wedding and she works them all the time. ...Melinda, Eric and their parents came up and thanked us many times and said the reception was better than they had even hoped. Melinda's parents asked for some cards and said they would refer us to coworkers, friends and anyone who needed a DJ.

The Bride and Groom, Zach & Jolene, held a receiving line down by the Saltwater Reef and when they were finished the wedding party all lined up at the exit to the Tropics. ... We had the grand parents stand up at their table and everyone applauded, then the parents, wedding party, Zach and Jolene were introduced and they walked into the dining area. ...Cake was served and then I told everyone that the first dance was going to be held on the Minnesota Trail and they all came out into the hall to see. ...All of a sudden, Karl comes out from behind the DJ table with the rubber band thingie I just took out of my hair and gives it to the groom. ...I did play No One by Alicia Keys dedicated to the groom from the bride and after they danced a minute alone on the dance floor everyone came in and circled them and showed a lot of love. ...People were not quite ready to go home but the zoo told us when we had to play our last song so we did not really have a choice.

Fortunately there is an elevator and we had been in this room before so it was all familiar and a fairly easy load in. ...We planned it so during the song, Fly Me To The Moon, Jenny and Greg would hold hands, when Frank Sinatra sang "In other words, hold my hand", and then he would take her in his arms and kiss her, right when Frank Sinatra says "in other words, baby kiss me". ...They told me, I told Karl, he got out his camera and he took pictures of the cake cutting, some pictures of Greg & Jenny's hands to show the rings. ... That might have been a problem for Jenny and Greg but Karl is a great photographer and they had confidence in him. ...At the end of the night a bridesmaid informed me that Jenny, the bride is a fabulous singer and is known to sing a certain Jewel song. ...They came up during the evening and told us that they were so happy they hired us, everything was going so well.

I was thrilled because I know there are many great DJ's in Wisconsin they could have asked and I felt honored that they chose us. Many of her guests asked if they needed a DJ referral and she told them there were some Minnesotans coming down to do the job. ...The first dance was Like Red On A Rose, Tim McGraw, Father/Daughter, Butterfly Kisses, Mother/Son was What A Wonderful World, Louie Armstrong then the Wedding Party Dance was Yeah by Usher. ...I heard a lot of people complimenting the video and the fact that this lady put it together so quickly and had really good footage was commendable. ...It was a lot of fun being back in that bowling alley again after so many years, watching my friends daughter dance with her new husband. ... It had been raining a lot these past few days and I am sure Jene and Kris were thrilled to have the sun as a guest on their special day. ...When we saw someone clinking we would go to them and they would have to stand up and say something about the bride and groom (share a story or experience or how they knew them) before Jene & Kris would kiss. ...Then the wedding party danced a slow song but it was immediately followed by Rascal Flatts version of Life Is A Highway and that got the party started again! ... The Bride, Kris, told us later that many of her guests commented that we, the DJ's, were a lot of fun and played great music all night. ... We had a guest speaker come in and all of us competitors listened to the speech and then were escorted out of the room to write our evaluations of the speaker and of the speech itself. ... I entered this competition because I felt I needed to improve in this area and competing would make me focus on it more. I am a person who tends to look at the good in things and I am starting to learn the benefit of giving constructive criticism and better ways to do it. I have learned in Toastmasters that I am actually giving a gift and helping people get better when I offer evaluations and ways that they might improve. ...This club has helped me so much with my public speaking skills and I am getting to a point where I feel I can help others too. ... Public speaking can be scary for all of us and one of the best ways to take the fear away is to join a club like Toastmasters.

A while ago we did the winter dance for the older students and last night was the 9th graders turn. ...Every time he played a song that got the kids super pumped he rubbed it in my face even if the one I had played got just as good a reaction. ... Each time we finished a show with Visitation, Karl and I both end up talking about what great kids go there. ...At the end of the night when we had played the last song, and said goodnight, the kids chanted for one more song. We had just played Don't Stop Believing by Journey (they knew all the words), so we waited a bit to make them think we were just packing it up and then we played Piece Of Me by Britney and they screamed! ...The parents and teachers had enjoyed the variety of music as well and thanked us for not just playing hip hop all night.

We have worked for Catholic schools before and we know to be careful with the playlist, however, this time the students made the playlist for us and it was approved by the school and ourselves. ... Jamie had two of her songs picked out for the ceremony and she wanted help with the rest so we set up the computer and while they practiced walking down the aisle I played some songs we had picked out. ... I am always excited to do this show because I know it is going to be spectacular and a great turn out no matter what weather we are having. ... Also, having done this show for the past 4 or 5 years we have a lot of experience with them and that always helps. ...I have never really been the DJ in the Karaoke room all by myself, Karl always did that job and it is a good thing I asked my son and his girlfriend to come because we had 150 song requests in 2 hours, I kid you not. ... I did make announcements that we had all the requests we could handle and that I wasn't taking anymore requests but that didn't stop them from trying. ... At the end of the night there were still quite a few girls that wanted to sing so I invited all of them up on stage and put on I Love Rock & Roll by my idol Joan Jet. ...I really didn't feel the cold when carrying the equipment out but I would not have liked to have been outside for more than 10 minutes straight.

They had a photo booth at the reception and the videographer had created a lovely montage and love story for the guests to view. The videographer, Jeff Fuchs of Northern Lights Video whom we have worked with before had also interviewed guests during the evening for a video guest book which I thought was a wonderful idea. ...The groom is a huge fan of WWE Wrestling and so we introduced each person as if they were entering the ring of a match and they each had their own snipet of a song. ...The Brides family really liked Polkas and the Grooms father asked for a few waltzes so we fit those in nicely and they were received well by the other guests. ...One thing I forgot to mention was instead of clinking for kisses during dinner is we set up a putting green in the horseshoe area that the head table created. ... There was a signing interpreter there for the guests that were deaf and two people that Lisa works with are deaf and came up to sign about the napkin tradition and Lisa interpreted it.

They have taken slideshows in a new and fun direction with an excellent web based interface for creating and sharing photo montages. What I like best is that you can use a music background that they provide or if you prefer, your own mp3 may be uploaded. ... Once you upload your photos and select your music track Animoto's servers go to work analyzing the music and photos in order to create a unique slide show. With heavy beat oriented modern music the slide show will have a more aggressive feel with transitions between the photos. ... I am not a dance teacher but I would be happy to teach a few steps if it will get even more people on the dance floor. ...I love the idea of putting special messages in a first dance song or even playing the first dance song again at the end of the evening with special messages in it that the Bride and Groom would be hearing for the first time.... I like the idea of either telling how the father feels or saying a little about him on the mic and then inviting them out to celebrate the Father/Daughter Dance or having the father prerecord a message in their song. ... I also like the idea of putting a message in a song for the Bride and Groom from someone who could not be at the wedding. ...Another goal for 2008 is to communicate more with friends and family prewedding to get good ideas to surprise/assist the Bride and Groom, for example with a message from someone, a special song from childhood, a funny story, anything to touch their hearts. ...I want the client to feel like I am definitely on board and on the same page with what they think needs to happen to make the event the best it can be.

I was not sure they wanted a DJ from the initial meeting, however, Karl and I laid out what we do for our clients and I think in the end they decided they would like the help. I always tell people that want their family to take care of the music that their family could be there having a good time and not worrying about anything. ...The bride had picked the Ingrid Michaelson song, The Way I Am for the unity candle and Canon in D for her entrance but needed help for the rest. ... We had to call a security guard to let us in the room because it is a college campus and things were closed for the evening. ...All the guests came back in after about half an hour and we did a Grand Entrance, it was high energy and a lot of fun, they hammed it up. ...There was a chocolate coating on the exterier and I was trying to cut the pieces thin enough for the cake to go around and it was hard to cut that chocolate exterier and not have the cake separate.

I flew home and changed clothes and put on some makeup and started driving in rush hour to Plymouth from Savage. ... These people were real easy to get along with and their company was doing well this year so they were all in great spirits. The owners gave away tons of gifts and they were good gifts too like flat screen tvs and video game systems and lots of other kinds of toys. It was an academy awards theme instead of christmas because there were many different ethnic and religious people there and we did not want to exclude or offend anyone. ... When I spoke on the microphone I tried to sound like I was at the academy awards and I made up categories for people and was very dramatic. We even did a grand entrance for the owners who came up and acted like they were receiving an academy award for best producers of a holiday party.

It was the snowiest, iciest it has been in quite awhile and wouldn't you know it would happen on a day we had to drive so far. We left super duper early and got a room in a hotel in Kasson which was close to the place where we would be working. ... It was a different kind of show for us but the bride and groom had hired a band and the band did not want to do those other things, so they ended up hiring a band and a dj. ... We only had the Bose towers and were not really equipped to handle this big band also did not even know what to charge if we did stay and rent our equipment. ...We did our job and saw familiar faces and took care of the Wedding party and guests and all the special events plus a little open dancing that lead up to 9pm. ... Then around 6:30 they showed up and surrounded our DJ table which had been so nice and neat, with 15 or more speakers and tons of cords and other sound equipment.

I wish I could make every show like this but not all couples are as outgoing or like to dance so much. They were talented and liked to perform which made their guests quite happy, all eyes were on them most of the evening because they were so charismatic and entertaining. I know I was suppose to be the entertainment but they are really there for the Bride and Groom and this couple took that to heart. ... I know I always feel this way after a wedding but it is honest and true. ... All you brides and grooms out there, if you want to make your wedding reception unique and memorable, give me shout. ... They treated us like royalty and I would love to work with them again.

We have been receiving a lot of monetary tips lately. That surprises me only because I feel like we are in a recession and these people are being so generous. ... We recently upgraded our speakers. The Mackies were good but our new Bose L1 system takes it up a notch. The Bose L1 sound great but they also project a clean detailed sound throughout a room. Announcements are much more clear, music is "danceable loud" but you can still carry on a discussion directly in front of them. Another distinct advantage is that they fit in with the room decor much better than traditional speakers. One groom commented "I could hear and feel the music but I couldn't tell where it was coming from".

Carol and I have been busy doing shows every weekend and without a doubt this has been our busiest year yet. If you are have a videographer at your reception wouldn't you want to take the opportunity to make a unique memory which could be viewed and enjoyed 25 years from now? ...The idea is that the grand entrance will most likely be video taped and anything that might detract from the quality of that video tape will be easily discernible both now, and when you watch that video ten or twenty years down the road. ...• If the entrance will be made through a set of doors keep them open for the wedding party but then shut them before the bride and groom are to enter. ...One thing that goes over very well at all receptions is that after the grand entrance the groom takes the microphone and thanks all of the guests for being there to share in this celebration. ...Another reason is if the photographer and videographer aren't going to be staying the entire evening then you will want to be sure to have them capture the first dance. I'm not exactly sure what to call this one but it was memorable, fun and very entertaining. The premise was in the idea that all of the groomsmen would place a numbered paper bag over their heads and have a dance contest. The guests or audience in this case would rate the dancing ability of each individual by cheering for the dancer with the specific number when called out. ...The hilariously funny part of this is that immediately after the start of the contest all the groomsmen took their paper bags off and left the dance floor. The best man was unaware of this and unwittingly danced through the entire contest by himself. Obviously there were a number of people involved in the joke but it sure was funny and the guests just loved it.

A recent trend lately at receptions is to include a DVD photo montage near the end of dinner featuring pictures of the bride and groom as they were growing up and after they met. These are created using home movies and photos taken over the couple's life and edited and set to music using professional video editing software. This one is best performed earlier in the evening and is good for getting people involved in the festivities. We invite all of the married couples to the dance floor while playing a series of slow romantic songs. After a minute or two we politely ask all couples married 5 years or less to take their seats. After another minute or so we ask couples married 10 years or less to take their seats. ... They are congratulated, applauded, made to feel special, and perhaps presented with a gift from the newlyweds. Before a friend's wedding reception, we passed out keys (blanks) to several girls and one guy. Before some toasts were made, the best man said to the guests, "Now that Jim is married and is no longer available, it is probably a good idea to have any of you girls out there with a key to his apartment to please turn it in now." Then the pre-selected girls (about thirty of them) slowly walked up and handed in their keys as they made bedroom-eyes at him and flirted a bit; some of the girls would turn in not just one key, but six or seven of them. Then the guy walked up, turned in the key, and kissed the groom on the cheek. ...Another twist to this would be to distribute fifteen blank keys to male friends of the bride-to-be and two more blank keys to a guy and a very old lady. Lighting is a key (and often overlooked) factor in setting the mood at your reception. A low level soft light like the kind given off by candles will create a more relaxed atmosphere. Find out if your venue can dim the lights, provide candles, or string up twinkle lights. Some of your guests will be more comfortable if the dance floor is as dark as possible to. The guests who may be a little shy about dancing in front of everyone will feel more relaxed if the lights are turned way down. If your DJ is providing a club type light show then that will look more spectacular and benefit from a darker dance floor too.
